Overview

The Heckel Discus (Symphysodon discus) is the original wild discus species described by Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840, distinct from the more common Symphysodon aequifasciatus. Identified by the prominent fifth vertical bar — the 'Heckel bar' — which is noticeably darker and thicker than the other four bars. Wild-caught Heckel Discus demand extremely soft, acidic blackwater conditions mimicking the Rio Negro tannin-stained habitat, and are significantly more challenging to keep than tank-bred discus. Best kept in species-only schools of 6+ specimens at temperatures of 84-88°F with pH 4.0-6.0 and near-zero hardness. Not recommended for community tanks — most common aquarium fish cannot tolerate the Heckel's required water parameters.

Care Guide for Heckel Discus

Tank Setup

Heckel Discus requires a minimum tank size of 75 gallons. Maintain water temperature between 84°F and 88°F, with a pH range of 4.0 to 6.0. A properly sized tank with adequate filtration and regular water changes is essential for long-term health. When housing Heckel Discus with other species, always choose a tank size that accommodates the most demanding fish in the community.

Feeding

Heckel Discus is a carnivore feeder. Provide a varied diet appropriate for carnivore species to ensure optimal health and coloration. Feed small portions 2–3 times daily, and remove uneaten food after a few minutes to maintain water quality.

Temperament & Compatibility

This species is classified as peaceful. Heckel Discus reaches an adult size of 8.0 inches and has a care level of expert. Always research compatibility before adding new fish to an established aquarium. Individual temperament can vary, so monitor new introductions closely for the first 48 hours.

Origin & Lifespan

Heckel Discus originates from South America (Rio Negro, Amazon Basin) and has an expected lifespan of 10-15 years when kept in proper water conditions with appropriate tank mates and diet.
